How We Formulate

How Every Moodtanicals Spray Is Made

Two parallel disciplines — one for scent, one for safety — come together in every bottle.

The aromatherapy world knows that citrus lifts your mood and lavender helps you sleep. We do too. But we didn't stop there. We went all the way down to the molecular level. To the exact terpene makeup of every essential oil in our library. And we built a system that uses that data to formulate mood blends with a precision the industry has never seen.

What we didn't expect was finding that precision already written into the oldest texts in the world. These plants were documented, measured, and trusted for thousands of years before the algorithm existed. We just finally have the math to show why.

Scent Formulation

How we select and balance oils for each mood profile.
01
Obtain Strain COA from Reputable Sources
We source Certificates of Analysis from established, reputable companies. Each COA documents the strain's verified terpene profile — the foundation every formula is built from.

02
Consult the Essential Oil Database
Our Essential Oil Database is built entirely from GC/MS reports — every entry is grounded in the verified terpene breakdown of that oil. On top of that foundation, we've developed two additional layers using a proprietary tool: a mood profile and an aroma profile for each oil.

03
Our Proprietary Tool Builds the Blend
This is where it gets hard. Every essential oil simultaneously affects terpene profile, mood, and aroma — pulling in all three directions at once. Finding a combination of real oils that satisfies all three thresholds together, not just one at a time, is a problem we built a proprietary tool to solve. No formula leaves this step unless it clears all three.

04
Refine the Aromatic Experience
The math can be perfect and the experience can still be flat. A second algorithm lets us sculpt the blend with intention — reinforcing a signature note, highlighting a dominant terpene, adjusting the aromatic character of the strain. All three thresholds keep running underneath the whole time. The first algorithm builds the blueprint. The second algorithm lets us shape the experience.

05
Finalize the Formula
Before a formula is locked in, we also verify it holds a traditional fragrance balance — with proper representation across top, middle, and base notes. Each blend is then set at a 6.6% essential oil concentration and documented on file, ready for compliance review.

Safety & Compliance
How we verify every formula meets international fragrance safety standards.
01
GC/MS Testing from Essential Oil Suppliers
Every essential oil we use comes with a GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry) lab report from the supplier. This identifies and quantifies the exact compounds present in each oil.

02
Audit Against IFRA 51st Amendment — Category 10B
Each ingredient is checked against the IFRA 51st Amendment — the safety standard set by the International Fragrance Association. Category 10B specifically covers non-aerosol room and linen sprays.

03
Check VOC Levels Against California CARB Standards
Our sprays are assessed for Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) content. California's CARB standard sets a 75% limit for room sprays. Ours come in well under that at approximately 31.6%.

04
Reformulate if Needed — Then Approve
Any formula that doesn't pass review is reformulated — not released. Every Moodtanicals spray that reaches a customer has cleared both IFRA and CARB review.
Reformulated if Non-CompliantApproved Before Release
Every Moodtanicals formula has been reviewed for compliance with the IFRA 51st Amendment standards for Category 10B — the category that governs room and linen sprays. Our sprays come in at approximately 31.6% VOC, well under the California CARB limit of 75% for room sprays.
